Mushrooms Touch the Heart
Here in Oregon, fall is an edible mushroom hunter's paradise. The damp and cooling nights bring a variety of mushrooms to the surface. My husband, Steve, loves this time of year as a forager. He brings home a cooler full of earth's delights, including lobster mushrooms, King Boletes, chanterelles, matsutakes, black trumpets, and more.
While he's been delighted by his forest time, I (and the EPIC / Radiant Heart Team) have continued to keep EPIC going as we immerse ourselves more in the path of helping people deeply with the assistance of psilocybin mushrooms.
We both savor the change of season in different ways. We, of course, both enjoy how the lingering warm weather and cool nights draw out the autumn season. In fact, the season of fall, the act of hunting for edible mushrooms, and a facilitated psilocybin journey all share the themes of introspection, surrender, and rebirth. Each of these experiences involves a turning inward, an acceptance of change and decay, and an eventual emergence into a new phase of life. My husband always comes back high on the forest, beaming from the natural elements. I return from working with others during their psychedelic journeys or from the supportive groups we offer feeling the same way. I've always felt that this time of year makes for often spectacular inner journeys, as the coolness and overcast days seem to beckon one to go inward, to snuggle up and reflect. If not with psychedelics, perhaps with a cup of tea while gazing out the window, connecting with some scene of nature.
While fall represents endings, it is also a preparation for the renewal of spring. The nutrients from fallen leaves enrich the soil, making way for future growth, and we can find hope in the idea that a new cycle is on the horizon. When my husband is out mushroom foraging, the mushrooms themselves are a symbol of rebirth, as they are the fruiting bodies of a mycelial network that thrives beneath the surface. Their appearance on the forest floor is a sign of a complex, hidden life cycle that transforms decaying matter into new sustenance. So much to ponder and appreciate, with nature being an endless and ready teacher if we can slow down enough to observe and reflect.
And, back to the work we do, supporting others in their transformation, we very much appreciate these little mushrooms (psychedelic ones in this case)—these wondrous teachers of the inner and outer world, of hidden mysteries, and igniters of release and rekindled passions. A facilitated psilocybin experience is often described as a journey that culminates in a feeling of being reborn into a new chapter. By shedding old thought patterns and emotional baggage, individuals can emerge with a renewed perspective, a sense of clarity, and an integrated version of their authentic self. Again, the mushrooms lead us in and through a beautiful and sometimes challenging season of change. We are better for it, and for that, we are thankful.

Saturday October 18th, 2-3pm PST- Legal Psilocybin in Oregon: What the Journey Looks Like | Heather Shelton
Location: Presbyterian Church, Yachats, Oregon
Heather will share the journey of EPIC Healing Eugene, the nation’s first licensed psilocybin service center. She’ll reflect on the challenges and breakthroughs of opening the doors to this historic space, and what it means to offer psilocybin services within Oregon’s new legal framework. Heather will guide the audience through what a healing journey looks like at the center—from the first intake conversation and preparation, to the psilocybin experience itself, and the deep work of integration that follows. Her talk offers a rare glimpse into how psilocybin is being practiced legally today, and the possibilities it opens for personal and collective healing.
Heather Shelton, Retired Nurse, Herbalist, and Senior Facilitator with EPIC Healing / Radiant Heart Consulting shares at a recent Nursing Conference in Alaska about the importance of Set, Setting, and Preparation. We Love Heather! And, so do her clients! Click link to watch short clip.
