EPIC Healing Eugene - Happy 2nd Birthday! 🎉

Cathy Rosewell Jonas / EPIC Healing Eugene was granted the first psilocybin service license in Oregon - May 5, 2023. Two years later, we’ve built a beautiful program of service and long-term support to clients that come to us.

A Walk Down Memory Lane - When EPIC Got Licensed (Part 1): On May 5, 2023, EPIC Healing Eugene received the first state-licensed for a psilocybin service center in Oregon (and the Nation), granted under Oregon’s Measure 109 in 2020. It took the state two years to develop rules for The Oregon Psilocybin Services Act, which grants licensure for service centers, facilitators, and manufactures (aka growers) to offer psilocybin under a strict, state-regulated framework. Cathy Jonas, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, is CEO for both EPIC Healing Eugene and Radiant Heart Consulting (EPIC’s sister facilitation services company), and a licensed facilitator herself. She shares the day she got the news and what followed:

“On May 1, 2023, which was also my birthday, I was outside gardening, as celebrating in nature is one of my birthday traditions. I noticed a message on my phone from Oregon Psilocybin Services. I returned the call feeling flutters in my chest and stomach. I wasn’t sure what the call was about, but I thought…. perhaps. I was soon congratulated that EPIC had been granted Oregon’s first service center license. I was also warned that there would be a lot of media attention, and I was asked if I was ready for it. It was a strange thing to hear and consider. I naively said I think I was, as I was making some Youtube videos about my process of trying to become a licensed facilitator, about psychedelic preparation, and eventually sharing the complicated process of trying to open a very small service center in the counseling suite I was leasing. In hindsight, I had a limited vision or awareness of what “going public” meant or would mean. They suggested that I get a publicist or someone to help me make a media statement. I was thinking, now this is really strange, who would be interested in psychedelic news and, if they were, it would just be a little flurry. I did agree to get some help and was connected with someone from the Healing Advocacy Fund who helped me write that very first public media statement. Still not knowing what that meant, it turned out that little news blurb went out to national and international news outlets, which landed EPIC Healing Eugene in the spotlight — and me. The attention was overwhelming, including regular calls for interviews and tours, reporters and others seeking statements about this and that, emails, and people just showing up, thinking we were a dispensary! (Oregon did not approve a dispensary model). (continued - Part 2 below).

EPIC Healing Eugene was granted first psilocybin service center license in Oregon - May 5, 2023. We saw our first clients on June 23, 2023, and have had over 500 clients since.

A Walk Down Memory Lane - When EPIC Got Licensed (Continued, Part 2):

Getting that much media attention also came with an enormous flurry of referrals. In order to open our doors to serve our first clients, we worked on sorting out numerous logistics. This included developing policies and procedures, as well as staff training on how to work in a regulated setting and follow all the OHA rules, while thoughtfully considering our developing service model for helping the clients who came to us. After receiving our license on May 5, 2023 and shortly after I was approved for my facilitator license, our staff first practiced as being “clients” so we could develop our program, learn about dosage in milligrams of psilocybin (vs. grams of dried mushrooms) and steadily prepared for serving our first clients on June 23, 2023. Initially, I was the only facilitator, so I was extremely busy navigating both the world of service and that of business. Gradually, we built a skilled team of intake, service workers, and facilitators, as well as a thoughtful business structure that included a Pay-It-Forward program to provide discounted services and offering a comprehensive long-term community of support for all our clients at no additional cost. We have provided over 600 client sessions for over 500 clients since opening our service center. It continues to be some of the most meaningful work of my life. Two years in, we are feeling very thankful that we (with the primary help of psilocybin itself) can support people so deeply in a way that western medicine can’t really touch, helping a person tenderly explore their inner world. Witnessing how so many clients experience inner journeys of healing and connecting with something much greater than the smaller view they had of themselves (and their problems) is part of the mystery and magic of how psilocybin works. We are very grateful to be part of the magic. We extend heartfelt gratitude to those who have come and shared their lives and personal journeys with us. It is our continued honor to serve with heart, mind, and spirit.”
